Keep It Movin' (To The K.I.M.)

February has been such a busy month for me personally, which explains the brief disruption in service. Between birthdays, step shows, Valentine's Day, and comeback speeches...I've been on the go.

As we close out Black History Month, let us remember Brother El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X. The 21st was the 40th Anniversary of his death by assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem.

Just for the record, Black History Month falls during the shortest month of the year because it was started as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson to coincide with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass' birthdays.

Know history know you.

No history no you.

Parental Advisory

Why?

Why was I listening to the radio last night when a woman called in a request for Omarion's song "O"?

Why is teen r&b/pop star Omarion singing that he wants to make the object of his affection have an orgasm?

Why did this woman call in only to make the request for her 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER?!?

TEN

YEARS

OLD

Requested by her mother. Now if you don't understand why there's a problem with this, you should really think twice about having kids of your own.

Office Space

Man, work. Is there anyone out there who loves going to their job everyday? Please, let me know.

My job is cool and everything, but I'd rather be somewhere because I want to, not because I have to. I guess that's the story of everyone's life, right?

And what happened to Donovan McNabb? I guess he didn't eat his Campbell's Chunky Soup before the game. Oh well. Hats off to the Patriots.

Oh yeah, about that State of the Union...Bush must be up to old habits (sniff sniff) if he thinks it's a good idea to take on Iran. Persia ain't Iraq. I don't want to have to go through a re-definition of "shock and awe." Yo, can we stabilize Afghanistan and Iraq first?

And about that Social Security plan...I'll have to get it later to make sure I still have a job to complain about.

Expanding Political Consciousness Through Hip Hop

Y'know, I was just thinking today that I'm doing my fellow citizens a disservice by not offering a fuller political perspective. I got caught up in Republicans vs. Democrats and forgot about other parties and schools of political thought, such as libertarianism.

As I'm checking out the blogroll on Hip Hop Blogs, I noticed one of the blogs is titled "Hip Hop and Libertarianism." So of course I check it out and it's a pretty chill blog. I may not agree with everything on it, but that's cool. I don't hate, I congratulate; and when I can, I participate.

So if you have a moment, check it out.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you: Hip Hop and Libertarianism has been around since 2001. Show love to the elders.

On This Day

When You Know History, You Know You

February 01, 1960: Four black college students began a sit-in protest at a lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., where they'd been refused service.

February 01, 1902: Langston Hughes, the American poet and prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance, was born.

February 01, 1868: Harper's Weekly featured a cartoon about Reconstruction (rebuilding after the Civil War).

State Chairs Endorse Dean for DNC Chief (Washingtonpost.com)

I'm tellin' you. Change is comin'. It's time to either lead, follow, or get the fudge out the way! Democrats can't beat Republicans playing the "me too" game. Throwing the words "morals," "values," and "God" into your speech vocabulary isn't going to do anything. It's like being upset about your weight so you buy different clothes to make you look better. It doesn't significantly change anything. You haven't solved the problem!! (and I speak from personal experience) You can't solve a problem by telling yourself it doesn't exist.

All this time the establishment is spending trying to slow down Howard Dean could be spent on making positive change. The Democratic Party status quo crew is more concerned with being important than bringing change for America. Honestly, how many of you really wanted to vote for John Kerry? How many of you really wanted him to be your president? I'm not talking about "as opposed to Bush," cuz that's a given. I'm saying how many of you really felt confident in John Kerry being the next president? Think about it for a second.

I sure didn't have confidence in him, I just didn't want any more Bushit. Kerry voted for the war, voted for No Child Left Behind, voted for Bush's tax plan, and then tried to say the man wasn't doing a good job. Of course Bush is doing a horrible job, but you helped him out! And you know this, mannnn!!! You can't have someone leading the party who doesn't represent the hearts and minds of the people in the party.

Stop playing politics. It's a new day for Democrats. Come hard or don't come at all.

Amendment

In an earlier posted titled "Free at Last" I said that if Lincoln had freed the slaves as is popularly thought, there would have been no need for the 13th Amendment. But on second thought, I recognize the need to codify the abolition of slavery and make it part of the central governing text which is the Constitution. But the truth still remains that slavery was legal in the United States until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865.

Actually that makes me wonder...if the Union forces had defeated the Confederacy early in war, before using Black troops, would slavery still have been abolished in 1865?
